BOLLYWOOD INDUSTRY

  • The Bollywood industry is such that everyone knows everyone either by relation or as friends and acquaintances. And it isn’t uncommon to find celebrities agreeing to a cameo in a film for this very reason, which explains Ajay Devgan and his wife Kajol’s appearance in Haal-e-Dil.Why? It’s the debut movie of Kumar Mangat’s daughter, Amita Pathak. Aside from Mangat once being Devgan’s business manager, they are close friends.Interestingly, Devgan was even involved in the auditions for the male leads opposite Pathak and, after an exhaustive search, settled on newcomers Nakuul Mehta and Adhyayan Suman.Given Devgan’s commitment to Pathak having a successful movie debut, he and his wife featured in the item scene for Oye Hoye, a Punjabi tune.

Kajol, by the way, was dressed in a stunning maroon salwar kameez for the shoot at the Filmistan studios in Mumbai.

  • Enlighten Film Company and Vivek Agnihotri Creates have joined forces to produce a film based on a well-known Hollywood stage production in the ’50s.The movie titled 12 is an adaptation of Reginald Rose’s 12 Angry Men. Having already secured permission for the celluloid adaptation, Agnihotri announced that he will be doubling as director as well. Interestingly, it was Sidney Lumet who first transported the play to the big screen.Wondering about the story? It revolves around 12 jurors who have to decide on whether or not an 18-year-old boy murdered his father. On why Agnihotri, who gave us Chocolate and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, was keen on this particular project, he told Bollywood Hungama: “I wanted to adapt this play for a long time, but the subject required a certain responsibility and I wasn’t sure I was ready for it. But recent incidents such as the Maharashtra-Northern divide and other prejudices affected me deeply. And I thought it’s time that I re-looked at the subject as it deals with the prejudices in a democracy. But reasoning still prevails. My take on it is that prejudice prevails because good men don’t reason. It’s not just a film project anymore; it’s my way of protesting.”

Agnihotri is looking at signing Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Victor Bannerjee and Om Puri among others for the film.

  • other winners at the ceremony were Dibakar Bannerjee’s Khosla Ka Ghosla, starring Anupam Kher and Boman Irani, for Best Hindi Film, and Madhur Bhandarkar for Best Director for his realistic storytelling with Traffic SignalInterestingly, Bhandarkar bagged National Awards for his earlier releases, Chandni Bar with Tabu and Page 3 with Konkona Sen Sharma.

Bollywood Hungama listed the other winners: Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who declined the Special Jury award in 2001 following a controversy, won the Best Actor award for his role in Suman Ghosh’s Podokkhep, while Tamil actress Priyamani won the Best Actress award for her performance in Ameer Sulthan’s Paruthiveeran, a film highlighting the dehumanising caste system.

  • And The Best Film in the Regional sector was awarded to Pulijanmam, a Malayalam film based on the famous play of the same name.
  • Actor-turned-producer Suniel Shetty has apparently been spotted with a worried look on his face. Why?It seems he recently had a falling out with Puran Chauhan, a wheelchair-bound former stuntman.Reports indicate that Chauhan was contracted by Shetty’s production house, Popkorn Entertainment, to help them acquire the rights to shoot Little Godfather at a railway station. But Chauhan failed to do so and his contract was terminated.

Now Shetty claims that he is being harassed by threatening phone calls from Chauhan. The actor has also lodged an official complaint at the local police station and his family is under police protection.

However, Chauhan rubbished the allegation and claimed that he was the real victim as it was Shetty who was abusive towards him.Hopefully, the issue will resolve itself soon.

  • So determined is veteran actor Anil Kapoor to keep his daughter Sonam in the running for lead roles that he has made it his personal mission to watch her waistline. And it started with her recent low-key birthday celebrations when daddy dearest got her a fat- and sugar-free cake.Known for her sweet tooth, Sonam said: “I thought that I had slimmed enough having lost 35kg before Saawariya. I’ve been constantly maintaining my figure. But I think dad sees that other girls are thinner and it is his way of letting me know that I need to match them.”She added: “I’m going on a diet. I need to be able to compete with the other new actresses. Look at Deepika (Padukone). She’s athletic and slim. I’m not an athlete, but I’m a runner. That is a sure way to lose weight.”So what else did Sonam do on her birthday?

“Nothing, I saw a film and then went to sleep early since I needed to look fresh the next morning to shoot for Delhi 6.”

Let’s hope Sonam’s competitive streak doesn’t see her becoming the poster girl for anorexia.
